DIY Whipped Body Butter

I've been on a journey to replace all toxic products in my life with safe, natural, non-toxic, and beneficial ones. It's pretty exhausting once you discover just how many things have toxic chemicals in them!

I started using coconut oil as an all-over moisturizer about a year ago. I absolutely love the way it makes my skin feel! However, this fall and winter has already been pretty cold and very dry, and I noticed that coconut oil by itself was not really keeping my skin moisturized as well these days. I also have been reading about the benefits of shea butter and cocoa butter for your skin - they are natural skin protectants and very moisturizing. I saw several recipes online for making your own lotions and creams. If you are freaked out at all by the thought of making your own lotion, you are completely not alone. I was totally the same way, but after seeing that so many people have had such success with it, I decided to give it a shot!

I discovered while making this lotion that I am pretty bad at following a recipe. I had a specific jar that I wanted to use for this, and all the recipes I found were for much larger quantities. I also didn't want to waste products if I ended up not liking it. SO - below is a very loose recipe that I used and the products I used.

DIY Whipped Body Butter

1 cup extra virgin organic  coconut oil
3 Tbsp Pure Shea Butter
2 Tbsp Cocoa Butter with Jojoba Oil
20 drops Young Living Palmarosa Essential Oil (can also use Lavender or another oil that supports skin health)

In a food processor, add all your ingredients except the essential oil. Whip until smooth. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides a few times and keep whipping! It will continue getting smoother and creamier as air whips into it. When it is whipped to the desired consistency, add your 20 drops of essential oils and whip again to combine.

Whippy!  The coconut oil and different butters could still have a little bit of grainy consistency, so whipping it for several minutes will only help emulsify the ingredients even more.

Using a spatula, scoop your lotion into desired container. I used a leftover glass jar with a lid that I had on hand. I think a big batch of this divided into mason jars with a cute tag would make a great Christmas gift!

I really love the scent of Palmarosa in this lotion, as it isn't overpowering and it's kind of a unique scent. The hubs also likes the scent, which means it's not too feminine or flowery.

This lotion is SUPER moisturizing and feels amazing. All of the individual ingredients (except the oil) are solids above a certain temperature, but since I whipped them together and added the essential oil, it has maintained a nice creamy consistency. I'd say it gives any storebought lotion a run for its money! And I know exactly what's in it, so no worries about sneaky toxins in your products.

If you'd like more information about Young Living Essential oils, please let me know! I'd be happy to help you order some Palmarosa or any other oil you'd like to try, or walk you through how to sign up to become a member of Young Living and receive a Premium Starter Kit.
