Plans for a New Year

I love the beginning of a new year.

I always look forward to the opportunity to reevaluate my activities and habits, and to make plans to start new things, get more organized, start things over, or stop doing certain things.

It's refreshing to know that with each new year is a chance to turn over a new leaf - full of promise for new experiences and opportunities. Some good and enjoyable, some bad and not very fun, but full of assurance of the Lord's faithfulness.

A new year is a fresh continuation of an experience and pursuit of an always faithful, always loving God.

I want 2012 to be a year that is marked by a pursuit of the knowledge of God through Scripture, prayer, service, community.

I have some other "resolutions", or things I would like to do in the year that are pretty typical, but the thing I want the most for my life this year is to be able to look back and see how I have grown to know God more deeply, to depend upon Him more fully, to be more satisfied and find more joy in Him than ever.

One of my most anticipated plans for 2012 is to memorize two (2) Scripture verses a month. I would love it if you would consider joining me and using this blog as the platform to keep each other accountable and to record the verses we choose to memorize throughout the year.

I am borrowing this idea from another blog, but I would like to do it on a smaller scale where we might not get lost in the shuffle. Plus, I want the accountability to actually do this thing (yikes!), you know?

So here's how it works.

On the 1st and the 15th of each month, I will write a post with the verse I am going to be memorizing for two weeks. After I post my verse, you will post in a comment the verse you will be memorizing. Write the verse out - not just the reference, it will help you start memorizing to have to write every word out.

You can choose to memorize the same verse as me or someone else if you wish, but I think it would be cool to see how God shows different Scriptures to everyone according to what they need to hear from Him.

Pretty much the rest is up to you! I hope that you will join me in endeavoring to know the Lord better through storing up His Words in our hearts this year.

I have heard countless people in their fifties and sixties say that the Scriptures they memorized when they were in their twenties seem to be locked in their minds, and that they are easily recalled when their faith and trust in God is tested and tried. I want to take advantage of the sharp mind that the Lord has given me in my young age and use it for His glory by storing and treasuring His Word in my mind and heart, and being able to skillfully use His Word to preach to myself and encourage and edify others throughout my life. If I am not consistently trying to memorize the words and principles of Scripture, I cannot ever expect to be able to share those words and principles with people I encounter who need to hear them. I want to be ready to give an answer for the Hope I have been given. I want to be ready to share the Gospel freely when an opportunity presents itself. I want to be ready to tell my kids and grandkids everything I can possibly think of about Jesus.

Will you join me?
